This is a still from the film Blind.  A friend of mine saw it at a film festival and has been raving about it ever since, comparing the visuals to the likes of The Fall, but as being far less cheery and colourful and more serious and drab, but in a stunning sort of way.  What really got me interested in it was that it made him cry.  He never, ever cries during films.

Anyway - I downloaded it yesterday and watched it this afternoon.  Honestly, I don’t think I can properly express my love for this film.  It’s absolutely stunning in every possible way.  The acting was brilliant.  It’s rich with detail.

The film is about a young man who has lost his sight.  His mother hires an albino woman to read to him.  While she reads, he escapes into a fantasy world rich with colour and beauty.  He thinks Marie (the albino) is the most beautiful woman in the world.  Due to her mother growing up, Marie feels she is ugly and should not be seen.  Ruben (the blind young man, I’m guessing he’s around 20) falls in love with her, and she falls in love with him.  But he gains his sight back, and she leaves, afraid that he won’t love her anymore.  I’m not going to say anymore because I don’t want to spoil this film for anyone.

I give this film my highest recommendation.  It’s one of the most beautiful, brilliantly well done films I’ve ever seen.

Edit- I should add, it’s in Dutch, which does mean subtitles!  I rank this among the likes of Pan’s Labyrinth & The Orphanage, so it will be worth it for those of you who don’t like subtitles.
